My grandmother on my father's side was a native American of the Potowanami tribe located in the midwest. She professed to have an interest in spiritualism. She owned strange books and a crystal ball, which she kept hidden in a velvet bag. As my 16th birthday approached, she asked me what I wanted. I told her I wanted a seance because I knew she did things like that. Reluctantly, she agreed. On December 31, 1969, nearing midnight, my grandmother, my mother, my best friend, and I sat at a folding card table. There was a candle in the middle of the table and all the lights were out. My grandmother closed her eyes and sat, like in a trance. After a few moments she said she saw a funeral, back in the south somewhere; people gathered, mourning. She fell silent and then she heard someone calling to my best friend, someone from the sea like a sailor. There was a pistol in the scene. My friend began to fidget and then essentially freaked out. He was a very rational young man and didn't strike me as the type that would give much credence to psychic things. The seance ended uneventfully but I was happy because I finally was able to sit in on one.

The next day, my mother received a call from family in New Orleans; her great-uncle died in the nightime of January 1.

My friend told me that his mother has been married to a sailor who had abused her and threatened her with a gun.

Call it coincidence. I can't.
